The Canyon Motel & RV Park offers Deep In The Grand Canyon
An Adventure Trek

Itinerary Description

This excursion is the most active that we offer and should be of great appeal to people of good physical health who want to work their legs as well as their minds on this educational and stunningly beautiful hike below the rim and into the Grand Canyon. Your naturalist trip leader will guide you through geologic time and offer an abundance of interesting information about the canyon as you traverse one of the South Rim trails (Actual trail to be used on a given excursion will vary depending upon weather, seasonality, crowds, and trip leader discretion the day of the tour).

Interpretation of the natural, geological, and historical character of the canyon will be the focus of your descent.  With multiple stops, we will learn about the canyon and the unique attributes that make it one of the seven natural wonders of the world. After experiencing the tranquil beauty of the Canyon and a light snack at our turnaround point (roughly 1.5 miles), your guide will lead you through a less talkative moderate hike back to the rim, with multiple breaks for interpretation and resting to assure peoples’ comfort. While only three (3) miles roundtrip, this hike covers roughly 1,100 vertical feet down into the canyon which makes for a more strenuous ascent back to the canyon rim. Exertion level is classified as just below a Somewhat Hard rating on the Borg Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) scale as the excursion has moments that might seem somewhat hard to a hiker during the ascent back to the rim but still feel comfortable for him or her to continue.

Note:  Depending on a given groups’ experience level we can make this a longer and more strenuous hike or shorten it a bit.  I have, for example taken a few groups as far as 4 miles into the canyon (8 miles round trip), on a 5-hour excursion.  On the other side, I’ve shortened the hike to be a 2-mile round trip and finished with a bit of a van tour.

Group size is limited to no more than 7 people per trip leader to allow for more direct, personal contact with your guide and to maximize overall participant comfort and experience. Appropriate footwear for hiking along uneven ground is required, as is appropriate clothing including sun-dampening, ventilated headgear. Winter hikes may require crampons which we will have available to our guests.  Your trip leader will have some water available but guests are required to bring their own water to accommodate their particular hydration needs. Snack foods to replenish the energy used during the hike are also strongly recommended.

Pricing*:  Adults $95, children 12 and under $50

Note:  A hike can be personalized to a group by purchase of 5 spots.

Winter departure times will be 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The afternoon hike will be a bit shorter and will end with a sunset.

Spring (March-end of May) 8:30 and 1:30 departures

Summer (June-end of August) 7:00 departure only unless otherwise scheduled with guide

Fall: same as winter and spring departures
