Arizona Getaway: Sleep on a caboose in N. Arizona
Posted: 06/16/2011
By: Deborah Stocks

“If you are headed up to the Grand Canyon this summer, you may be considering a night’s stay in Williams.

Well, why not make the stay memorable by sleeping in an authentic 1929 Santa Fe caboose.

The Canyon Motel & RV Park sits along Route 66 with a spectacular view of the 9,200 foot Bill Williams Mountain, according to the property's website.

The park is just blocks away from the heart of Williams with its restaurants, shopping galleries and the “striking architecture of 19th Century Williams.”

AS FEATURED ON TAKE MY TRIP

TakeMyTrip.comDaniel Woodrum of Take My Trip.com featured a road stop at The Canyon Motel & RV Park. He writes: “Exploring Williams, Arizona, I ended Day Zero, and began Day 1 in one of the best family-owned, old-style motels I've ever seen. Simply named the 'Canyon Motel and RV Park,' this place does everything right.” Read the entire review here.

Woodrum says about himself, “I'm passionate about several things: photography, writing, and perhaps most of all, travel.  I love to hit the road, and discover all the amazing places in this country.  The scenery.  The culture.  The food.”

We're happy to report he loved his stay here as well!

Arizona Highways Magazine Review

Snuggled in a blanket of aromatic pines and whispering breezes, 18 newly renovated cottages welcome visitors to a world where nature's beauty stretches in every direction. Escape to a cozy cottage setting with rustic furnishings, comfortable beds, with microwave ovens, coffee makers, and refrigerators. Breathtaking views feature the towering spire of Bill William's mountain, whose peak touches the clouds at 9,200 feet. Hiking, mountain biking, bird watching, and other outdoor activities abound, and the Grand Canyon is a short drive north on scenic Highway 64.

You'll find this updated older motel on the eastern outskirts of Williams, tucked against the trees. While the setting and new rooms in duplex flagstone cottages are nice enough, the real attractions are the railroad cars parked in the front yard. You can stay in a caboose or a Pullman car, which makes this a fun place to overnight if you're planning on taking the excursion train to the Grand Canyon. I prefer the caboose rooms, which have a more authentic feel. A horseshoe pit, swing set, board games, a fire ring, propane barbecues, and a nature trail provide plenty of entertainment for the whole family.
